AI Shopping Agents Are Coming for Holiday 2026: How to Prepare

This week alone, ChatGPT was spotted testing a shopping question box, Google added a new store address attribute to Merchant Center, and Google’s AI Mode now tracks prices and stock across a Shopping Graph of more than 60 billion products. AI shopping agents are no longer a future idea. They are going to be a real part of this holiday season.

Salesforce predicts that 20% of all 2026 holiday ecommerce traffic will come from AI chat agents. If you run an online store, here is what that means and what to fix before Black Friday.

What are AI shopping agents?

An AI shopping agent is an assistant that searches, compares and sometimes buys products for a person. Instead of opening ten tabs, a shopper asks “find me a waterproof hiking jacket under $150 that ships before the 20th” and the agent does the legwork.

Today these agents show up in a few places:

  • General AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which recommend products and link to stores.
  • Search engines, such as Google AI Mode, which can now watch for price drops and back in stock items for users.
  • Social and messaging apps, like Meta’s Muse, which now supports Shop Pay through Shopify’s partnership.
  • Brand owned assistants on store websites that answer product questions and guide buyers.

The numbers behind the shift

From Salesforce’s holiday research:

  • 50% of shoppers now use an AI assistant somewhere in their buying journey, up 67% year over year.
  • 74% say they trust product recommendations from AI chat.
  • Using an AI assistant as the first stop for shopping grew 200% between May 2025 and May 2026.
  • One in three ecommerce sites is expected to have its own shopper agent live by Cyber Week.
  • Last year, brands with shopper agents grew holiday sales 6.2%, compared with 3.9% for brands without.

How AI shopping agents decide what to recommend

Agents do not see your beautiful homepage banner. They read data. The stores that get recommended tend to have:

  • Complete product data: clear titles, real descriptions, sizes, materials, colours and GTINs.
  • Accurate price and stock, synced to Google Merchant Center and other feeds.
  • Clear shipping and return policies written in plain text, with delivery dates.
  • Product structured data on every product page.
  • Reviews that are real and visible.
  • A fast, accessible site so that when the agent sends a person over, they can actually buy.

Your pre holiday checklist for AI shopping agents

  1. Audit your product titles and descriptions. Replace vague copy like “Our best seller!” with facts an agent can match to a question.
  2. Fix your Merchant Center feed. Clear every warning, add GTINs, and add the new store address attribute if you have physical locations.
  3. Check your structured data with Google’s Rich Results Test on a few product pages.
  4. Publish shipping cut off dates for the holidays on a real page, not just in a banner image.
  5. Test checkout on mobile. Agent referred shoppers often arrive on phones and expect a fast checkout.
  6. Consider your own shopper assistant. A simple AI assistant trained on your catalogue and policies can answer questions at 3am.
  7. Track AI traffic. Set up an AI channel in GA4 using our guide on how to see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI shopping agents buy products on their own?

Some can complete purchases with the shopper’s approval, but most today still recommend products and send the shopper to the store to buy.

Do I need a new website for AI shopping agents?

Usually not. Most stores need better product data, clean feeds and a faster site rather than a full rebuild.

Is it too late to prepare for the 2026 holidays?

No. Product data and feed fixes can be done in days, and they keep paying off after the holidays.
