How to See ChatGPT Traffic in Google Analytics (GA4)

If your ChatGPT referrals suddenly dropped in the last week, it may not be your fault. Around October 9, 2026, many ChatGPT answers stopped adding the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag to cited links. Search Engine Roundtable flagged it on October 14, and research from Profound found that tagged links in answers fell from about 98% on October 8 to 66% by October 14. That makes knowing how to see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics more important, and a bit harder.

Here is how we set up GA4 at Web Brick Studio to catch as much AI traffic as possible, plus how to read the numbers now that tracking has changed.

Why ChatGPT traffic is hard to track

Google Analytics works out where a visitor came from using two things: UTM tags in the link and the referrer that the browser passes along. ChatGPT traffic can arrive in three ways:

  • With a UTM tag, showing as source “chatgpt.com”. This was the norm until early October.
  • With a referrer only, which GA4 may still label as chatgpt.com when the browser passes it.
  • With nothing at all, for example from the mobile app or a copied link. This lands in Direct and is invisible as AI traffic.

Profound links the drop to ChatGPT’s newer answer layout, which grew from 2% of answers to about 35% in a week. OpenAI has not confirmed a fix, and even if tags come back, the missing data will not be filled in.

How to see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics (quick check)

  1. Open GA4 and go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
  2. Change the main dimension to Session source / medium.
  3. Type chatgpt in the search box above the table.
  4. Set the date range to the last 90 days to see the trend, including the drop after October 9.

To see which pages ChatGPT sends people to, add a secondary dimension of Landing page + query string.

Set up an AI channel group (the better way)

Searching for one source each time gets old fast, and ChatGPT is not the only AI tool sending visits. A custom channel group puts all AI assistants in one line of your reports.

  1. Go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups.
  2. Copy the default channel group and name it something like “Channels with AI”.
  3. Add a new channel called AI Assistants.
  4. Set the condition to Source matches regex and use: chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini\.google|copilot|claude\.ai|meta\.ai
  5. Drag the new channel above Referral so it gets matched first, then save.

Now in Traffic acquisition you can switch the primary dimension to your new channel group and see AI traffic as its own row, with conversions and engagement next to it.

How to read the numbers after the October change

  • Add an annotation on October 9 so nobody thinks the site suddenly lost a third of its AI visits.
  • Watch Direct traffic on pages that ChatGPT tends to cite. If Direct rises on those pages as tagged AI traffic falls, that is likely the same visitors.
  • Track conversions, not just sessions. AI visitors often arrive with high intent. A small number of sessions can still bring leads.
  • Check how often you get cited. Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask and note whether your brand appears. Visibility matters even when clicks are not tagged.
  • Do not make big decisions based on one week of referral data.

Make your site easy for AI tools to cite

Tracking only tells you what happened. To get more AI traffic in the first place, the same basics that help with Google apply: clear answers, real expertise, fast pages and clean structure. Our guide on how to rank in Google AI Mode covers it step by step.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my ChatGPT traffic drop in October 2026?

From around October 9, many ChatGPT links stopped carrying UTM tags. Some of that traffic is probably now showing as Direct instead.

Does ChatGPT traffic show as referral or organic?

Usually Referral with the source chatgpt.com, unless you create a custom channel group. Untagged visits with no referrer show as Direct.

Can I recover the missing ChatGPT data?

No. Analytics cannot rebuild source data that was never sent. You can only improve tracking from now on.

Need analytics you can trust?

Web Brick Studio sets up GA4, Search Console and conversion tracking as part of every website we build, so you can see what is really bringing in customers. Get in touch and we will check your setup.
