Google AI Mode and AI Overviews Link Update (October 2026): What Changes for Your Traffic

On October 15, 2026, Google announced a set of changes to how links appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Source links can now show up earlier in answers, carousels of timely articles are expanding, related article links at the end of answers are changing design and Google is testing two new formats: a section for official task pages and creator names on videos.
For website owners who have watched clicks fall since AI answers took over the top of the results page, this is the first update in a while that leans toward sending people to websites. But it is not a reason to rebuild your strategy overnight. Here is what changed, what did not and what we recommend.
The five changes, in plain English
1. Inline links appear earlier
Links to sources can now appear higher inside AI answers, closer to the sentence they support. Previously many sources were grouped further down or tucked into a side panel. This is launching, not a test.
2. A test for official task pages
Google plans to test a section that links to official destinations for tasks. Think renewing a licence, paying a bill, booking an appointment or checking an order. The idea is to send people straight to the page where they can actually finish the job.
3. Timely article carousels are expanding
Carousels that show recent articles for news style queries are expanding to more locations and languages. Google did not list every new market.
4. New related article links
Some answers now end with thumbnail based related article links, rather than plain text links.
5. Creator names on videos
A test in AI Mode shows the creator’s name on video results, linking to a Google Search profile. Search profiles are currently limited to Canada, India and the United States and need at least 10,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok. Google says profiles do not directly affect ranking.
What has not changed
It is easy to read too much into an announcement like this, so a few reality checks:
- Not everyone sees every format. Some of these are tests, and Google did not give end dates or full market lists.
- Your position number will not improve. In Search Console, every link inside an AI Overview shares the overview’s single position. Moving higher inside the answer will not show as a better ranking.
- More impressions do not prove more clicks. You need to measure visits and conversions separately.
- There is no new ranking formula to chase. The basics of helpful, accurate, crawlable content still decide whether you are cited.
How to measure the impact
Since June 2026, Search Console has had a generative AI report showing AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. It rolled out to all sites by August 31. Use it like this:
- Note your AI Overview and AI Mode impressions and clicks for the four weeks before October 15.
- Compare with the four weeks after, for the same queries and pages.
- Segment by country and device. Mobile and desktop can behave very differently.
- Check conversions in Google Analytics, not just sessions. If you also want to see visits from ChatGPT, our guide on ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics walks through it.
Remember that Search Console data for this report uses Pacific Time. If you are in London or Sydney, a “day” in the report will not line up exactly with your local day.
What to do with your content now
Make task pages obvious
If people come to your site to do something (book, buy, get a quote, pay, track an order), make sure that page is easy for Google to find and understand. Use a clear title, a plain explanation at the top, and make sure it is indexed and not blocked by robots.txt or a login wall. That is the kind of page the official task section is designed to surface.
Answer the question early
Inline links tend to point to passages that directly support a sentence in the answer. Pages that state the answer clearly in the first paragraph, then explain, are easier to cite. Our guide on how to rank in Google AI Mode covers the structure we use.
Refresh timely content only when facts change
With article carousels expanding, it is tempting to change the date on old posts. Do not. Update a page when the facts actually change, and say what changed. Google is good at spotting cosmetic refreshes.
Use real images with accurate alt text
Thumbnail based related links mean your featured image may now appear inside AI answers. Use relevant images, not generic stock, and write alt text that describes them accurately.
Consider Preferred Sources
Domain and subdomain level sites can qualify for Google’s Preferred Sources feature. A subdirectory on its own cannot. If you publish regularly, encourage loyal readers to add you.
What this means in the US, UK and Australia
United States: US users usually see Google’s tests first. If your traffic is mostly American, you are the most likely to notice the inline link change early. Search profiles for creators are already available in the US.
United Kingdom: AI Overviews and AI Mode are live in the UK, but Google has not confirmed when every test will reach British users. UK publishers should watch the timely carousel expansion closely, since news style queries are a big source of traffic.
Australia: Google did not name Australia in the expansion details. Australian businesses should track AI Overview impressions in Search Console by country to see when changes arrive, and focus on clear local service and task pages in the meantime.
The bigger picture
Over the past year, AI answers have changed how people search. Clicks have become harder to earn, but the clicks that do come through tend to be from people who are further along in their decision. Google’s October changes suggest it wants AI answers to send more of that traffic to original sources. The sites that will benefit are the ones that are clear, specific and genuinely useful.
A simple monthly AI search routine
You do not need an enterprise SEO tool to keep on top of this. Set aside thirty minutes each month and work through these steps:
- Search your top ten money keywords in a private window, on desktop and mobile, and note whether an AI Overview appears and whether your site is cited.
- Open the Search Console generative AI report and export impressions and clicks by page.
- Compare with last month and flag pages that lost visibility.
- Read the AI answer for any query where a competitor is cited instead of you. Ask what question they answered more clearly.
- Update one page with clearer answers, better examples or fresher facts.
- Log what you changed so you can see what worked next month.
Small, regular improvements beat a big rewrite every two years, especially while Google keeps testing new formats.

Frequently asked questions
When did Google change links in AI Mode?
Google announced the changes on October 15, 2026. Some are live now and some are tests.
Will this increase my traffic?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. Measure clicks and conversions, not just impressions.
Why did my AI Overview position not change?
Search Console reports one position for the whole AI Overview, so moving higher inside it does not change the number.
