What Is Claude Duet? Anthropic’s New AI Agent for Small Businesses Explained

On October 21, 2026, Anthropic introduced Claude Duet, a new app that does more than answer questions. Duet watches the work you hand it, builds daily briefings and dashboards from your data, suggests what to do next and can run tasks in the background on its own virtual machine. It only comes back to you when it needs a decision or an approval.

It is aimed squarely at professionals and small businesses, which makes it one of the more interesting AI launches of the month for agency owners, freelancers and store owners. Here is what it does, who can get it and how it compares with the other AI agents fighting for space on your phone.

Claude Duet in one paragraph

Duet is a proactive agent. Most AI chat apps wait for you to type something. Duet is designed to keep an eye on ongoing tasks, pull information together and send you recommendations without being asked. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic’s most capable model, and connects to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins in the Claude Marketplace, so it can work with the tools a small business already uses.

What Claude Duet can do

Daily briefings

Duet can put together a morning briefing from your connected data. Think of a single summary of what changed overnight: new leads, overdue invoices, support tickets, sales numbers and meetings for the day.

Dashboards

It can build simple dashboards from your data so you can see what is going on without opening five different tools. For a small team without a data analyst, that alone could save hours a week.

Background tasks

This is the big one. Duet can run work on its own virtual machine while you get on with your day. It might research suppliers, prepare a report or tidy up a spreadsheet, and then come back when it needs a yes or no from you.

Purchases with approval

Duet can buy things online using Stripe’s Link wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. Sensitive steps such as payments always need your approval. It will not trade securities or move money between accounts.

What Claude Duet will not do

Anthropic has been unusually direct about the limits. In its own words, “Duet isn’t good at handling errands or booking tickets.” It is not meant to be a personal concierge, and it does not show you a live view of a browser clicking around. That separates it from personal agents such as Instinct, which focus on errands.

The safety design is also worth noting:

  • A new classifier checks each message to stop sensitive information leaking.
  • By default, Duet declines requests for credit card numbers and government ID numbers.
  • Credentials and browsing are isolated from the rest of the system.
  • Approval gates sit in front of anything risky, like spending money.

Who can use Claude Duet right now

Duet launched as a research preview for Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. It is available as an app on iOS and Android and on the web at claude.ai. Access is through a waitlist, so even eligible subscribers may need to wait. Anthropic has not shared separate pricing beyond the Pro and Max plan requirement.

How Duet compares with other AI agents

Duet arrives in a crowded month. TechCrunch named Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot and Fo as competitors. Google is rolling out skills in the Gemini app and a Gemini agent for Workspace, and Microsoft has its new Copilot with Cowork and Autopilot.

The difference is positioning. Duet is less about doing chores for you and more about acting like a sharp operations assistant: watching the numbers, preparing the paperwork and flagging what needs attention. For a small business owner who is also the salesperson, accountant and support desk, that is a sensible gap to fill.

Practical ways a small business could use Duet

  • Agency owners: a morning brief of new enquiries, project deadlines and unpaid invoices.
  • Shopify and WooCommerce stores: a dashboard of yesterday’s sales, low stock items and refund requests.
  • Consultants: background research on a prospect before a call, with a one page summary ready when you sit down.
  • Service businesses: follow up reminders for quotes that have gone quiet.
  • Office admin: ordering supplies through Shop Pay, with your approval before anything is paid.

What Duet means for your website

Here is the part most coverage misses. Agents like Duet do not just use your own data. When they research suppliers, compare services or buy products, they visit websites on behalf of real customers. If an agent cannot read your prices, services or stock levels, it may simply recommend someone else.

That means your website now has two audiences: people and the AI agents working for them. Clear service pages, structured product data, honest pricing and fast load times all help. We wrote more about this in our guides on AI shopping agents and ranking in Google AI Mode.

What this means in the US, UK and Australia

United States: US Pro and Max subscribers are first in line. If you are a US small business already paying for Claude, join the waitlist now so you can test it before the holiday rush.

United Kingdom: Duet is not yet available in the UK. Many AI agents have reached the UK and EU later because of data protection rules and the EU AI Act, so expect a delay. In the meantime, UK businesses can prepare by tidying up the data and connectors they would want an agent to use.

Australia: Australia was not part of the first rollout either. Australian businesses that sell into the US should still pay attention, because US shoppers using agents like Duet may soon be visiting your store through an AI assistant rather than a search engine.

Should you sign up?

If you already pay for Claude Pro or Max and you are in the US, yes, join the waitlist. Start with low risk jobs such as briefings and dashboards before you let it near purchases. Keep approvals switched on, connect only the tools it actually needs and review what it does for the first few weeks.

If you are outside the US, use the wait to get your house in order. Clean data, clear processes and a website that machines can read are what make any AI agent useful.

How to get ready before your invite arrives

A few simple steps will make Duet far more useful on day one:

  • Decide what you want briefed. Write down the five numbers or updates you check every morning. That becomes your first briefing request.
  • Tidy your connected tools. Remove old integrations and make sure your CRM, inbox and store data are up to date. An agent working from messy data gives messy answers.
  • Set spending rules. Agree in advance what Duet is allowed to buy, from which suppliers and up to what amount, even though it will still ask for approval.
  • Pick one owner. In a small team, make one person responsible for reviewing what the agent does during the first month.
