WordPress 7.2 Release Date, Features and How to Prepare

If you run a WordPress site, mark three dates in your calendar. The WordPress 7.2 release date is planned for December 8, 2026, with Beta 1 arriving on October 20 and the first release candidate on November 17. That schedule comes straight from the WordPress Developer Blog’s October roundup, published this week.
We maintain WordPress sites for clients across several countries, so we went through the roadmap to pull out what will actually affect business owners, not just core contributors. Here is what is coming, what is not, and what you should do before you click update.
WordPress 7.2 release date and full timeline
| Milestone | Planned date | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Beta 1 | October 20, 2026 | Developers can start testing. Do not run it on a live site. |
| Release Candidate 1 | November 17, 2026 | Features are frozen. Good time to test on a staging copy. |
| Final release | December 8, 2026 | Public release. Update after backups and plugin checks. |
Keep in mind that the official Roadmap to 7.2 says its items are “being actively pursued”. In plain English, some features may slip to 7.3. Dates can move too, so treat them as targets.
The changes worth knowing about
A new default theme called Ipsum
WordPress 7.2 is set to ship with Ipsum, a minimal blog theme. The interesting part is that it is designed to meet WCAG AA accessibility standards across all of its style variations. That is a good sign for the whole ecosystem, since many sites start from the default theme.
Safer Application Passwords
Application Passwords let other apps and services connect to your site. Planned improvements include an email notice when a new one is added, detection of non HTTPS setups, safer default roles and SameSite cookie support. If you use integrations, mobile apps or AI tools that connect to WordPress, this is a welcome security upgrade.
A rebuilt content sanitizer
The wp_kses() function, which cleans up HTML in posts and comments, is being rebuilt on top of the newer HTML API. This is targeted for 7.2 or 7.3. Most sites will never notice. Sites with custom code that relies on odd HTML might, and there is a temporary filter to restore the old behaviour if needed.
Database change for developers
The NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES SQL mode will be off by default. If your host or a custom plugin depends on it, a developer should check before December.
Block editor improvements
Recent Gutenberg releases feeding into 7.2 add responsive style controls for custom blocks, text shadow as a proper design option, a new Grid layout for galleries and around 330 redrawn icons. If you build pages with blocks, layouts get more flexible on mobile.
What is not coming in 7.2
Real time collaborative editing is intentionally not on the 7.2 roadmap. The move to React 19 is also unlikely to fully land in this release. If you were waiting for Google Docs style co-editing, it is still a while away.
Do not skip 7.1.3 while you wait
Before you think about 7.2, make sure you are on WordPress 7.1.3. Released on October 6, it fixed seven security issues, including stored cross site scripting on the comments screen and a second order SQL injection in the export tool. The WordPress team recommends updating immediately. If your site is several versions behind, that is a bigger risk than any new feature.
How to prepare your site for WordPress 7.2
- Update to 7.1.3 now and confirm automatic security updates are switched on.
- Take a full backup of files and database before any major update.
- Use a staging site. Most good hosts, including Hostinger, offer one click staging. Test RC1 there in late November.
- Check your plugins and page builder. Elementor, WooCommerce and SEO plugins usually release compatibility updates around launch. Wait for those before updating.
- Review custom code. Anything that filters HTML or touches the database directly deserves a quick developer check.
- Update in a quiet window. Avoid peak sales periods. Updating a busy store during Black Friday week is asking for trouble.

Frequently asked questions
When is the WordPress 7.2 release date?
The final release is planned for December 8, 2026. Beta 1 is due October 20 and RC1 on November 17.
Should I update to WordPress 7.2 on release day?
For a small blog with few plugins, updating soon after release is usually fine after a backup. For stores and business sites, wait a few days for plugin updates and test on staging first.
Will WordPress 7.2 break Elementor?
Major page builders normally test against beta and RC versions. Keep Elementor updated and test on staging, especially if you use custom widgets or add ons.
