New Shopify Shipping Features for Holiday 2026: Batch Fulfillment, Auto Labels, Royal Mail Pickup and More

Shipping is where the holiday season is won or lost. Customers forgive a lot, but they do not forgive a gift that arrives on December 27. In the second half of October 2026, Shopify shipped a set of fulfilment and shipping updates that are worth setting up before Black Friday on November 27, not during it.

Here is what is new, who it helps and how to use each feature.

1. Batch fulfillment for up to 250 orders (October 16)

You can now fulfil orders in batches of up to 250, grouped by product type or destination. Instead of opening orders one at a time, you select a group, buy labels and mark them fulfilled together.

Who it helps: stores that pack and ship in house and get order spikes during sales. If you sell one hero product, you can batch every order for it and pack them on a production line.

The catch: batch fulfillment needs a self managed location. If a 3PL or fulfilment app handles your orders, this is not for those orders.

How to use it well:

  • Batch by destination to group domestic and international orders, since they often need different customs forms and services.
  • Batch by product type to speed up picking.
  • Run a test batch of five orders this week so you know the flow before the rush.

2. Automatic shipping labels with Shopify Flow (October 15)

A new Shopify Flow action buys shipping labels automatically when orders match conditions you set. For example: if an order is domestic, under 2kg and contains only in stock items, buy a standard label straight away.

Who it helps: stores with predictable orders where most parcels go by the same service. It removes a manual step and gets labels printed sooner.

Be careful with:

  • Orders that might be fraudulent. Add a condition to skip orders with a high fraud risk, or you will pay for labels you have to void.
  • Pre orders and back orders. Exclude them so you do not buy labels too early.
  • Address problems. Consider excluding orders where Shopify flags an address issue.

Start with a narrow rule and widen it once you trust it.

3. Royal Mail pickup points at checkout (UK, October 15)

UK stores can now offer Royal Mail pickup points at checkout. Shoppers choose a nearby location such as a Post Office or a Royal Mail customer service point, instead of home delivery.

Why it matters: a lot of UK online shoppers are out at work during the day, and missed deliveries are a big source of complaints in December. Pickup points also reduce porch theft. If you sell in the UK, this is the update to switch on first.

4. DHL eCommerce labels in the Netherlands and Poland (October 16)

DHL eCommerce labels are now available for stores in the Netherlands and Poland, covering Dutch domestic and Polish EU shipments. Not relevant for most of our US, UK and Australian readers, but useful if you use a warehouse in either country to serve European customers.

5. Return shipping fees now taxed like shipping (US, October 23)

For US stores using Shopify Tax or Tax Platform, return shipping fees are now taxed like other shipping charges. If you previously set up a manual workaround to charge tax on return fees, review it now, or you risk charging tax twice.

Check a test return in your store and look at the tax line on the refund. If you are not sure how your returns are configured, ask whoever set up your tax settings.

6. Smarter Shop app carts (October 5)

Slightly earlier in the month, Shopify made carts in the Shop app sync across devices before purchase, with faster checkout, one tap sign in and abandoned cart reminders sent by Shop. Combined with Shop Pay, this helps shoppers who browse on their phone at lunch and buy on a laptop at night.

Your holiday shipping plan

New features help, but a plan helps more. Here is what we recommend:

  1. Publish your Christmas cut off dates on product pages, the cart and a banner. Check your carriers’ official last posting dates and add a buffer of one or two days for your own processing.
  2. Set shipping profiles correctly. The Shopify API 2026-10 update changed how carrier services appear, so check that every live rate shows at checkout. Our Shopify API 2026-10 guide explains why.
  3. Offer a clear free shipping threshold and show progress toward it in the cart.
  4. Stock up on packaging before November. Suppliers run low too.
  5. Prepare a returns policy for gifts, including extended returns into January, and display it near the Add to Cart button.
  6. Write template emails for delays, so support can respond quickly if a carrier falls behind.

What this means in the US, UK and Australia

United States: The tax change on return shipping is the one to check this week. Batch fulfillment and Flow labels will help stores that ship from their own location handle Black Friday and Cyber Monday volume. USPS, UPS and FedEx all publish holiday shipping deadlines. Build your cut off dates from those.

United Kingdom: Royal Mail pickup points are the standout. Pair them with a clear message at checkout like “Not home during the day? Choose a pickup point.” Royal Mail’s last recommended posting dates for Christmas usually fall in mid to late December, but check the official dates and plan for strikes or weather delays.

Australia: None of October’s carrier specific updates were Australian, but batch fulfillment and Flow labels work the same way. Australia Post and courier networks get very busy in December, and regional deliveries take longer. Set cut off dates early, especially for Western Australia, the Northern Territory and rural areas.

Common shipping mistakes we see every December

  • Free shipping that loses money. Check your average parcel cost before setting a threshold.
  • Delivery estimates that are too optimistic. Under promise. A parcel that arrives early is a nice surprise.
  • No plan for out of stock items. Use inventory settings so sold out items stop selling, or are clearly marked as pre order.
  • International orders with no duties information. Tell shoppers upfront if they may pay duties on delivery.

Example Flow rule to start with

If you have never used Shopify Flow, here is a safe first rule for automatic labels that most small stores can copy:

  • Trigger: Order created.
  • Condition 1: Shipping country is your home country.
  • Condition 2: Order risk level is low.
  • Condition 3: All items are in stock and none are tagged pre order.
  • Condition 4: Total weight is under your standard parcel limit.
  • Action: Buy a label with your usual standard service.
  • Action: Add an order tag such as “auto-label” so you can find these orders later.

Run it for a week, check every tagged order, and only then widen the rule to include more services or destinations.
