Is AI Generated Code Reliable? What New 2026 Data Shows

AI now writes a big share of the world’s software. A BairesDev survey released on October 13, 2026 found that 42% of developers say AI writes at least half of their code, up from just 12% a year ago. So the obvious question for anyone paying for a website or app is this: is AI generated code reliable enough to trust with your business?
We use AI tools every day at Web Brick Studio. They make us faster. But the data coming out this month backs up what we have learned the hard way: AI code is only as good as the person reviewing it.
What the latest surveys found
Writing is faster, debugging is slower
A survey of 300 senior engineering leaders by Coleman Parkes for Undo, covered by InfoQ, found that teams spend about 9.8 hours a week producing code but 16.9 hours a week debugging it. That is around 42% of the working week spent fixing things.
Some other numbers from that survey:
- 35% of AI generated code reaches production before the team fully understands it.
- 80% say coding agents struggle with hard problems in complex codebases.
- 81% had an outage or incident in the last six months.
- 93% had seen an AI give a wrong root cause diagnosis at least once.
- 79% said agents write code much faster, yet overall release cycles are “no faster than before”.
Developers have become reviewers
The BairesDev Dev Barometer found that only 21% of developers spend more than half their week writing new code. Most of their time now goes into reviewing, testing and fixing. Separate Stack Overflow data shows only 7% of developers trust AI output for important decisions without checking it.
Quality gaps show up in the browser
An AudioEye study from the same week found that every site built by five major AI coding tools failed basic accessibility checks. We break that down in our post on whether AI built websites are accessible.
So, is AI generated code reliable?
Our honest answer: it is reliable for some jobs and risky for others.
| Usually reliable | Needs careful review |
|---|---|
| Boilerplate, layouts and simple components | Payments, checkout and anything handling money |
| Small scripts and data clean up | Logins, user roles and permissions |
| Writing tests and documentation | Database queries and data migrations |
| Converting designs to basic HTML and CSS | Integrations with third party APIs |
| Explaining unfamiliar code | Performance and accessibility at scale |
The pattern is simple. The more an error would cost you, the more a human needs to understand every line.
Common problems we find in AI written code
- Code that works in the demo and fails with real data, like a product filter that breaks with 2,000 products instead of 20.
- Security shortcuts, such as API keys placed in front end code or forms with no validation.
- Made up functions or outdated methods that look right but do not exist in the version you are running.
- Duplicate logic scattered across files, which makes later changes slow and risky.
- Heavy JavaScript that hurts speed and Core Web Vitals.
How to use AI code safely in your project
- Keep a human owner. Someone on the project must understand the code well enough to fix it at 2am.
- Review every change before it goes live, especially anything touching money, data or logins.
- Test with real data and real devices, not just a happy path demo.
- Use staging. Never let AI generated changes go straight to a live site.
- Ask your developer how they use AI. A good agency will be open about it and explain how they check the output.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI generated code safe to use on a business website?
Yes, if it is reviewed and tested by an experienced developer. Unreviewed AI code is where most of the risk comes from.
Does AI make web development cheaper?
It can speed up the first draft, which helps. But the surveys show debugging and review time has grown, so the savings are smaller than many people expect.
Can I build my whole app with AI and no developer?
For a prototype, maybe. For anything that takes payments, stores customer data or needs to scale, you will want an expert involved.
Work with developers who check the work
Web Brick Studio uses AI where it helps and human judgment where it counts. We build custom web applications, WordPress sites and Shopify stores, and we also rescue projects that were built quickly with AI and now need fixing.
